Surrounded by his family, Ben Shaw, 79, of Elmo, TX passed into the arms of his savior May 30, 2022. He was loved by his family and friends and known for his kindness and generosity.
Ben was born July 25, 1942, in McCrory, Arkansas to Paul Moses Shaw and Gladys Ruth Shaw (Thompson). Ben fondly remembered growing up and playing in the woods and creeks near his childhood home. Ben moved to Dallas, Texas, and as a skilled mechanic, began his career in automotive repair and ran a prominent service station as general manager on Lovers and Inwood. While raising his young family and working full time, he returned to university earning his degree in accounting from East Texas State University. Later, he would build a successful business in air conditioning service.
Ben married Peggy Shaw (Smith) June 2, 1973, in Mesquite, Texas. They lovingly raised four children, and would later leave Dallas for Quinlan where they tended and cared for herds of goats, a large stock pond and wooded acreage. Ben’s passions for the outdoors and building included engineering and constructing toys for his grandchildren, such as, an outdoor merry-go-round.
Ben’s interests also included artistic endeavors, such as, landscaping, woodworking, stained glass, and he started the process of opening a performance business as a clown. He was an avid reader and had an unquenchable curiosity and fascination of people and the world.
He will be remembered as a loving, loyal and generous man who would go to extreme lengths to help those in need and who always had time for a chat over a cup of coffee.
Ben is survived by his wife, Peggy; siblings Garry Shaw of Little Rock, AR, Vera Massey of Rockwall, TX and Connie Piper of Pangburn, AR; children Morgana Shaw, Salina Shaw Myers, Benjamin Shaw; grandchildren Beau McDermott, Nolan McDermott, Ashley Ervin, Stefan Van Roy, Crystal Horton, Ben Shaw, Jr., Alison Shaw and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.
Ben is preceded in death by his parents, Paul Moses and Gladys Ruth; sister, Doris Prewitt; brother, Paul Eugene Shaw and son, Allen Shaw.
Memorial service is scheduled for June 10, 2022, 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Kaufman, 2000 W. Fair Street.
